If you have neck and back pain due to scoliosis than chiropractic care may be your best choice. We’ve got some great information to share below on Neck and Back Pain Due to Scoliosis: a Chiropractic Care Center Can Help.

What is scoliosis?

Scoliosis is an abnormal curving of the spine. Your spine is your backbone.  Everyone’s spine naturally curves a bit. But people with scoliosis have a spine that curves too much. With scoliosis, the spine rotates and develops a side-to-side curve. Curves may be as mild as 10 degrees, or as severe as 100 degrees or more. The American Chiropractic Association estimates up to seven million Americans suffer from scoliosis. Moreover, as the degree of curvature increases, the excess curvature can cause other health problems.

Symptoms and Causes

Scoliosis can be part of a disorder (e.g. poliomyelitis). This includes neurologic, muscular, congenital (born with it) bone anomalies, developmental (e.g., due to abnormal collagen), and several other disorders.

The majority of scoliosis, however, are idiopathic. “Idiopathic” means there is no known definite cause. It can affect people of any age, from babies to adults, but most often starts in children aged 10 to 15 (idiopathic). Idiopathic scoliosis is usually discovered during growth in childhood or adolescence. When it begins or is found after puberty (after complete skeletal growth), it is called adult scoliosis.

The cause of adult scoliosis varies depending on the type of scoliosis as noted above. The most common form of adult scoliosis is degenerative arthritis (spine curves as you age). In some cases, adolescent scoliosis may develop symptoms with aging and require treatment.

Firstly, the majority of scoliosis curves do not progress to compromising the cardiopulmonary system. In fact, forced vital capacity in nonsmokers does not decrease significantly until curves progress to 100° to 120° (a rare occurrence even in adulthood). Secondly, cosmetic appearance can be a concern. Thirdly, some are born with it, and some get scoliosis as they age. Lastly, 90% of scoliosis patients have a spinal curvature that is not severe enough to require surgery, yet is extremely painful because of how it affects the body’s anatomy.

What Do Chiropractors Do to Help?

In milder cases, scoliosis may not be easily noticed by the person or their family. Detecting scoliosis early in children is especially important because some forms of scoliosis keep progressing. Parents or guardians, a child’s doctor, or school screening can detect scoliosis.  Detection by a parent is usually based on either noticing shoulder elevation or noticing that clothes hang unevenly. Doctors of chiropractic have a detailed knowledge of musculoskeletal issues, conditions, and disorders. The comprehensive physical examinations all chiropractors provide with new patients can help identify scoliosis.

Balance is often a problem in children with idiopathic scoliosis. It is also likely that as an adult, chronic back pain is more common. So a major concern is to reduce the pain component, improve function (e.g. balance) and prevent progression. The only component however that is amenable to correction in idiopathic scoliosis is likely the functional component of the curve.

Many patients with scoliosis find non-drug, non-invasive treatment through chiropractic care centers.  The theory is, by freeing up movement at each spinal segmental level with regular adjustments, the spine is kept more flexible and scoliosis is less likely to progress. Adjustments decrease the pressure on your nervous system.  This eliminates the pain and muscle spasm.
